Ad Blocker

Ad blocker blocks advertising components (images, flash animation, subframes) inside web pages based on URL matching. Ad blocks maintains a built-in block list, a user-defined block list and a user-defined allow list. Each list includes URL wildcard patterns. Any web resources matching the block list but not matching the allow list won't be downloaded. The built-in block list is fairly large and aggressive. It is likely to block web pages or components that you actually want to view. If that happens, you can add the web addresses that you want to visit into the white list or disable the Ad Blocker completely.

You can quickly enable/disable Ad blocker by selecting "Tools:Ad blocker:Enable Ad blocker" from the menu.

Ad Blocker Options

To configure more options of the Ad blocker, select "Tools:Ad Blocker:Ad Blocker Options" from the menu. The following options are available

  • Enable Ad Blocker

  • Allow List: Edit the user-defined allow list.

  • Block List: Edit the user-defined block list.

  • Enable built-in block list: Enable the large built-in block list.

  • View built-in block list: View the entries inside the built-in block list. This list is read-only and will be updated at each installation of SlimBrowser.

Writing URL Patterns

Both the allow list and block list consist of URL patterns. You can use * to represent zero or more characters, use @ to represent one character.

Important tips

  • If you see an AD image not blocked by the AD blocker, you can right click on it while holding both CTRL and SHIFT. Then select "Block this AD" from the popup menu. After that, you will see a dialog to add the URL of the image into the block list. You can modify the URL and add wildcards to expand the matching scope if necessary.
  • You can select "Tools:Ad Blocker:Ad Blocker History" to open the "Ad Blocker History" window. This window is a non-modal dialog and can show the URLs of web components while it is being blocked. If you have something blocked by mistake, this window can help you find out what to unlock.

You are encouraged to report the domain or URL of obtrusive and notorious ad servers to us so that we can include it into the built-in black list.
