Here's my HijackThis log from this morning. Now the problem was not happening when I took this. But it'll show you what's on my system. I'll do another scan while it's occurring, since late last night, even with the older version, I did seem to have the problem:

He's probably given up.

Hey Bob, it's time to do a clean up there, you have an Alexa infection. I'd run Spybot Search & Destroy if I were you.

Well, I don't know what more I can do to point out the problem with Slimbrowser....

I know about the Alexa stuff. Spybot won't get rid of it. I've gotten rid of the worst part of it through deletion, etc... , but it's apparently impossible to remove all the crap that Alexa plants on your system. That stuff's been there for years, and I've run spybot hundreds of times while the Alexa stuff was there. Convinced me never to install a toolbar again. Meanwhile, I think what's left of it is harmless - it can't call home anymore.

Ad-Aware should get rid of Alexa. Also, for best protection, install Spyware Blaster. I've been using the two for years (granted, on Win98SE) and spyware would pay gold to get onto my system but it just won't budge.

Also, one word of advice: certain badly coded or ill-intentioned applications would not call the 'default browser' registry key, but would directly call iexplore.exe instead, at which point they might also pass some parameters to bring some 'bad guys' in. On my system, I've renamed iexplore.exe to iexplore.exe.000 so that it won't be found by such applications (or websites).
You may do the same, unless you plan on actually using it.

No, I got out of the hospital after 43 days yesterday evening. :(
Pugwash wrote:He's probably given up.
Never. 8)

As for the Alexa issue, download and run RegRun Security Suite. the 30-day free trial should be sufficient.

Also, Spyware Blaster is not "best protection". It's good, but it's only one single component. See my thread from, oh, 18 months or so ago: How To: Protect your computer from spyware/adware/viruses

Holy Shit! I hope you're ok, Hans - that's a long hospital stay. What was your ailment?

I'm better, which is saying something I suppose. :? I've been having to tell this so much, I suppose it's a good thing I write it all down.

What was supposed to be a routine arthroscopic medical procedure (for my back, as my spine was damaged in the military in 1994), turned into a medically-induced coma to prevent any permanent damage to my brain from swelling caused by a nosocomial infection (which means I got it at the hospital during the "routine" procedure.) I'm sure most everyone has at some point read about patients picking up a "bug" in a hospital, which in my case happened during a minimally invasive, generally-considered-safe outpatient procedure. The orthopaedic surgeons told me that it most likely occurred when the needles were initially inserted, and apparently a resistant bacterium (I'm told it's called "Acinetobacter baumannii", which is naturally multi-resistant pathogenic bacteria) somehow got in at the injection site (at the base of my spine, where the needle and the laser were being used; at least, that's what the doctors think happened.) I certainly wasn't aware, but I've been told this has been happening more in recent years (nosocomial infections, that is.) Compounding the problem is that I had no "notify in case of emergency" person listed (this being a fairly routine procedure I've had done before, I didn't expect any problems - I've had this outpatient procedure 4 times in 5 years now - and should have been in and out in one day), so the hospital did not know who to contact until some bright person finally got my cell phone, called AT&T, and had them provide the unlock code so they could get in and see my phone book and try to find someone to make medical decisions for me in an emergency. In short, a perfect storm of "who the heck do we contact to let someone know there's a problem?". I was in and out of consciousness for the first ten days or so, unable to form a coherent thought much less speak coherently, and I'm told I had a persistent 105.8° fever (something else I learned: the brain's thermostat will apparently stop a fever from climbing above 106° F) and there was swelling in my cranium due to the fever and infection that spread up the path of least resistance, from the spine to the brain, which was the doctor's major concern (among others.) Massive doses of numerous antibiotics finally destroyed the infection. But that's more than anyone probably wanted to know. I'm not sure that "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger", because I certainly don't feel stronger right now, that's for sure.

Not only that, but my car was towed and impounded from the parking lot; apparently someone had the bright idea that it was abandoned since it didn't move for several weeks. The hospital says I'm on the hook for the charges for that, since the parking lot is "privately managed and contracted" by the towing company (sounds like a racket to me.) That's the very definition of "adding insult to injury", in my opinion.

BUT, that's not even the worst part. After (finally) getting home on September 9, I started going through and taking care of the bills and what-not. Turns out I had no mail waiting for me. I was like "WTH?!?!? Where's all my mail?" Turns out the postal carrier saw my box was overflowing, so after 10 days of not picking up my mail, they took everything back to the post office. After letting it sit there for 10 more days, without my or anyone on my behalf contacting them, the USPS "policy" is to mark everything UNDELIVERABLE and RETURN TO SENDER! So all my bills, my checks (clients, disability from the Army, etc.) were all returned to the senders. Now I have to contact basically everyone and tell them that yes, my address is still the same, and yes, please send my mail to me.

And the coup de grâce, which is the absolute worst thing that happened: I was the victim of identity theft during that time. It turns out that on July 26 (two days before I went in, and coincidentally, my ex-wife's birthday), someone named "Doan Nguyen" booked a flight on United Airlines from Saigon to San Francisco, travelling on July 31, and another flight on August 1, travelling from Shangai to Chicago, USING MY CREDIT CARDS, to the tune of $1,360.90. He also tried to buy stuff on iTunes, but for some reason none of those charges went through. I've been on the phone with credit card companies, and fortunately, they're investigating this, but in the meantime, the card has been locked down and my credit has been affected (obviously.) Tracking down the security breach for that credit card shouldn't be too hard, seeing as I've only used it in two places in the last 18 months: TiVo (recurring monthly billing) and the US Mint, for the $1 Presidential Coins Proof sets I've been buying. Ergo, "Doan Nguyen" had to have gotten my credit card number from one of those two places. I've already spoken to TiVo (since I had to give them a new credit card number for billing), and I need to contact the US Mint next. :? Had I not been incapacitated, I would have caught the charges immediately (I use Microsoft Money to manage my finances, so the charge would have shown up when it went through on July 29, in time for me to stop him from flying), but seeing as I wasn't able to, he got lucky. Very lucky.

Whew! But, I'm back, and I'm recovering. That's something, I suppose.

Worth repeating - Holy Shit! It was just one damn thing after another. Well, at least you're out of the hospital now and can begin to pick up the threads.... Gee, Hans, I really hope you have better luck in the future.

Yep, it was (and still is) a huge PITA. :? One of my domain names expired, and someone snatched it up. Not a huge problem, since I really wasn't using it anymore, but it's why my graphics aren't loading (they were stored on that domain, and of course now it doesn't resolve to my servers anymore.) Haven't gotten around to moving everything to a new server yet.

Checking out SlimBrowser 4.11.001 Beta today, usnig it now on my (freshly repaired!) laptop. Still not seeing any "crawling" on websites, but to get back on topic, anyone who's still having this issue, try out the new build and see if the issue persists.

I'm using 4.10, build 15. And I still have the problem. (Went back to newer builds when older still had the problem.) Looking at other software to maybe solve it. I'm wondering about AVG, Spybot, etc... Especially AVG....

Pretty clear it's not AVG, since I completely uninstalled it and switched to Avast, and still have the same problem with Slimbrowser.

Well, it's something on your computer. I'm leaning toward it being the OS, not a third-party software, but IIRC, most people experiencing this isse are on XP. I still can't duplicate the problem on any of my test systems. :?

I'm on 4.10, build 15 also. No change lately, so I've been using IE7 a fair bit because SB is just too slow.
